I won't be switching back to Apollo though - a scragend scorned and all that! I'd rather it collect dust than create another UAD customer by selling it. BSOD message is: SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION.

On my previous windows install (with older hardware), I was able to set the buffer size much smaller without any audio artifacts.

We would strongly recommend checking that your computer/motherboard is. Reducing ASIO latency Focusrite 2i4, Windows 10, ASIO4all The best buffer size I can set on ASIO4ALL without getting artifacts is 704, which at at 44.1Khz leads to 19ms of latency. Please see below a run-down of Focusrite product compatibility with Windows 10 as it currently stands. This applies to systems with Intel/AMD processors, ARM-based systems are not supported and may not work. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a fantastic addition for your home studio.

The problem appeared, I think, two Windows 10 updates ago.

The manual says Focusrite can run right out of the box w/o installing drives, etc. This doesnt happen if Cakewalk is not open. This compatibility information applies to Windows 10 version 20H2. Now the Focusrite device is not recognised by Windows 10. When Cakewalk is open and I disconnect a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 2nd gen (ASIO driver), it results in a Blue Screen of Death. I can see TotalMix is very configurable, it took me ages to stop feedback loops to outboard with my Focusrite Optopre dynamic (and it was really fussy about ADAT and it wouldn't clock over BNC) on the other hand my Behringer ADA8200 worked first time - plug and go! All I'm saying is the RME experience hasn't been easy sailing so far. I have a Lenovo V310 on Windows 10 build 18363.815 and Cakewalk 2020.04. Still, it's giving me acceptable performance on USB so while it's working I'll leave it there! I don't see why it should suddenly be a problem with the RME.

Perhaps TotalMix is a bit harder to use that UAD console software at first, but it is also way more configurable, and actually pretty simple once you get your head round it.Well the FW card worked beautifully with my Apollo and works fine with my UAD satellite now with no latency issues. Sounds like there is an issue with your FW card rather than the RME interface? I get better noticeably better performance from FW on my UCX than the USB port.
